Tan Chau

The traditional silk village of Tan Chau town (An Giang) was established for more than a century, which is famous for Lanh My A silk products. Although its reputation has now declined, the craft village still produces the famous Lanh My A silk. The descendants in the craft village always continue the tradition of their fathers to create quintessential products for life.

According to the records of the Economic Office of Tan Chau Town, around 1920, residents in present-day Long Chau and many places in Tan Chau mainly lived by farming mulberry, raising silkworms, and weaving silk. Around the 1940s, Tan Chau became the largest silk center in the South, with Lanh My A silk products becoming widely known. At that time, most families grew mulberry, raised silkworms or engaged in silk weaving. From early in the morning to late at night, the villagers always hear the rattling of the shuttle and frame kicking. Everywhere one goes, they always see Lanh My A silk drying endlessly. By the 1960s, Tan Chau silk products were not only supplied domestically but also exported to countries such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Philippines, France... Customers who bought and used Lanh My A are mainly the elites. One thing special about this product is that it is only worn on holidays, weddings or other important events. However, in the following years, silk products were becoming less and less popular among customers. Faced with the risk of losing a craft village, at the end of 2006, An Giang province decided to establish Tan Chau silk craft village with 243 households engaged in the trade, accounting for more than 25% of Tan Chau's households, including 133 households. silk production households, 105 weaving households and 5 specialized dyeing households.

After a period of innovating, up to now, Tan Chau silk craft village still has around 20 establishments operating regularly, with about 190 employees. Every year, silk households in Tan Chau make a few thousand meters of Lanh My A to export to European countries.
